You won the educational credit from the FIDERH of the Bank of Mexico or a postgraduate scholarship from CONAHCYT to pursue your master's degree at a Spanish university. You have the financing resolved, but when you show up at BLS Polanco, critical doubts arise: How is the letter of credit presented?Should I apostille it?Does it completely replace my bank statements?Learn to protect your file.
The Legal Value of Official Financing Letters in Mexico
In accordance with Spain's national visa regulations, financial solvency does not have to come exclusively from personal bank accounts: article 38 of the Immigration Regulation fully admits scholarships, subsidies and credits granted by public organizations of recognized prestige.
Both FIDERH (federal public trust administered by the Bank of Mexico) and CONAHCYT are institutionally recognized by the Consulate General of Spain in Mexico as first-level solvency guarantors.
Requirements that the Award Letter must contain
In order for BLS staff and the consular evaluator to accept the letter as a substitute for bank funds, the document must specify:
- Official letterhead of the Bank of Mexico / FIDERH or CONAHCYT, with signature of the competent official.
- Full name of the student identical to that on their Mexican passport.
- Name of the Spanish university and exact academic program that was approved for funding.
- Total amount awarded broken down in euros or dollars, specifying the amounts allocated to tuition and the monthly items assigned for support/maintenance.

If the monthly amount assigned by FIDERH or CONAHCYT for support covers 100% of the monthly IPREM in Spain (minimum 600 euros per month for the student), the letter of guarantee replaces 100% the need for bank statements from the parents.
However, if the credit only covers tuition or leaves a margin of less than 600 euros per month for support, the applicant must necessarily supplement the difference with their own or their parents' bank statements from the last three months.
