Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Mexicans: SAT Tax & Income Rules 2026

How to structure your SAT tax filings (RESICO or freelance), meet the 58,000 MXN benchmark, and gain citizenship in 2 years.

The flags of Mexico and Spain merged into one, joined by a diagonal seam

You bill clients across the United States, Canada, or Europe while living in Mexico City, Guadalajara, or Monterrey and want to establish yourself in Europe. Spain's Startups Law offers Mexican professionals a direct route to European residency with advantageous tax rules and EU passport eligibility in two years.

For Mexican remote workers, the main complexity when applying for an international telework residence authorization lies in how to document freelance or remote earnings to Spanish immigration officials using official SAT filings and cross-border commercial agreements.

The income benchmark: 200% of Spain's SMI (approx. 58,000 MXN/month)

To qualify, the primary applicant must demonstrate regular gross earnings equal to at least two hundred percent of Spain's Minimum Interprofessional Wage. For 2026, this translates to 2,849 euros monthly, or roughly 58,000 Mexican pesos depending on prevailing exchange rates.

When bringing along a spouse or dependents, add 75% of the SMI for the first dependent (roughly 21,000 MXN) and 25% for each minor child (around 7,000 MXN), confirmed through verified banking records spanning the past three months.

SAT Tax Certificates: RESICO or Persona Física con Actividad Empresarial

Independent contractors must provide an up-to-date Constancia de Situación Fiscal issued by SAT with a scannable QR verification code, proving registration under RESICO or individual commercial activity schemes.

Certified digital invoices (CFDIs) alongside monthly provisional tax returns must accompany active service contracts showing at least three months of prior relationship with companies outside Spain.

Applying directly in Spain via UGE: 3-year permit advantage

Mexican passport holders can travel visa-free to Spain as tourists and submit their digital nomad application directly to the Large Business Unit (UGE-CE) within their first sixty days. In-country filings secure an immediate three-year residence permit, rather than the one-year visa issued by consulates.

With a three-year initial permit in hand, Mexican nationals comfortably fulfill the two consecutive years of lawful residence required under the Spanish Civil Code to file for Spanish citizenship, without relinquishing their Mexican nationality.
