Spain Student Visa from the USA (2026 Guide): BLS Jurisdictions & Checklist

How to locate your assigned BLS center by state, the FBI federal apostille rule, money order changes, and zero-copay health insurance.

You got admitted into a bachelor or master's program in Madrid or Barcelona and live in the United States. You booked an appointment at the New York BLS office because it was geographically closer, but intake staff turn your folder away: your driver's license is from another state and belongs elsewhere.

Filing for a Spanish student visa from the US follows rigid consular boundaries. The network of outsourced BLS International centers operates under strict jurisdictional rules where proof of residence and document authentication determine acceptance.

Consular jurisdictions: where you must submit your application

BLS Spain centers operate in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. Each center exclusively accepts residents from designated states verified through a valid state driver's license or state ID card.

If you attend college away from your permanent home, you can usually file within your campus jurisdiction by providing an official university enrollment letter, physical student ID, and on-campus housing proof.

FBI federal background check with U.S. Department of State apostille

For study programs longer than one hundred and eighty days, Spanish law mandates a criminal background certificate. A common and devastating mistake is obtaining a state or county police certificate: Spanish consulates categorically reject state-level checks.

You must order an FBI Identity History Summary via USPS live-scan fingerprinting and submit it to the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. for a federal Hague Apostille, which requires four to eight weeks of advance processing.

Payment method shift: moving away from USPS money orders

Historically, Spanish consulates across the US strictly required postal money orders. Under updated BLS branch protocols, payment handling varies between debit cards, certified cashier checks, and exact cash.

Arriving with an outdated payment instrument can result in cancelled appointments on the spot. Always double check your specific jurisdiction branch policy within forty-eight hours of your visit.
