You are going to apply for a national visa for Spain for more than 180 days and you discover that in Peru there are three different background certificates: police (PNP), criminal (Judiciary) and judicial (INPE).Which ones does the Spanish Consulate in Lima really require?Should all three be apostilled? We explain the exact circuit so you don't waste time or money.

What are the Background Required by the Spanish Consulate?

For the Spanish legal system, the accreditation of having no criminal record requires certifying that the person has not been convicted of crimes in the countries where they have resided in the last five years.

In Peru, the nuclear document required by the Consulate General of Spain in Lima is the Certificate of Criminal Record issued by the Judicial Branch of Peru. However, for long-term or residence visas, it is advisable to also present the Certificate of Judicial Records (from INPE) to protect the absence of prison admissions.

Electronic Processing of the Criminal Certificate (Judicial Branch)

The Electronic Certificate of Criminal Record is processed 100% online through the platform of the Judicial Branch (cape.pj.gob.pe):

  1. Make the payment of the fee at the Banco de la Nación or through the pagalo.pe platform (Judiciary Branch fee).
  2. Enter the platform with your DNI number and proof of payment validation code.
  3. The system validates your biometrics with the RENIEC and generates an official PDF file digitally signed by the Judiciary with a verification QR code.

Digital Apostille before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RREE)

Once you have the official PDF from the Judiciary, you must request the Hague Apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru:

  1. Access the RREE Apostille and Digital Legalization portal (servicios.gob.pe / RREE Perú).
  2. Select the option for documents with digital signature of the Judiciary and upload the original PDF file.
  3. Make the payment of the consular apostille fee (approximately 32 Peruvian soles) through pagalo.pe.
  4. Within 24 to 48 business hours, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry sends the document with the electronic Hague Apostille incorporated to your email.

Key Practical Tips

What the team recommends before you file anything:

  • Strict expiration. Peruvian criminal records expire 90 calendar days from their issuance before the consular authorities of Spain.
  • Do not modify or print and rescan the Judiciary PDF before uploading it to the Chancellery. The RREE system requires the original PDF file with the digital signature metadata intact.

Required Documentation Checklist

  1. Valid Peruvian DNI for biometric validation with RENIEC.
  2. Payment of Judiciary and RREE fees through pagano.pe.
  3. Download the original Criminal Record Certificate issued by the Judicial Branch.
  4. Digital Apostille Application on the platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  5. Clear print of the apostilled certificate to deliver at the BLS Lima window.
