Medical insurance for the Spain visa from Colombia: accepted and rejected policies
Learn about the medical insurance that the Spanish Consulate in Bogotá and BLS reject: policies with deductibles, travel insurance and authorized insurance without co-payments.

You bought travel insurance with international coverage of $100,000 USD, you proudly take it to your appointment at BLS Bogotá and the official tells you that it is useless and that your file is being observed.Health insurance is the number one reason for consular requirements in Colombia. We explain exactly what clauses the consul is looking for and what policies are systematically rejected.
Why Does BLS Reject Travel Insurance and Credit Cards?
Many Colombian applicants assume that traditional travel insurance (such as those offered by Assist Card, Universal Assistance, Terrawind or Visa/Mastercard credit card coverage) is valid for a study or residence visa in Spain. This is a critical error.
Travel insurance is a temporary emergency assistance policy with maximum insured capital limits and reimbursement clauses.Spanish immigration regulations require that foreigners have comprehensive health coverage equivalent to the National Health System (SNS), which can only be offered by a comprehensive health insurance policy taken out with an insurer authorized in Spain.
The Three Clauses Reviewed by the Evaluator in Bogotá
For your policy to be accepted without objections by the Consulate General of Spain in Bogotá, the insurance certificate issued in Spanish must explicitly certify three conditions:
- No Copayments (Zero Copayment)The insured does not have to pay any additional amount for each medical consultation, diagnostic test or hospital admission.
- No DeficienciesThat the coverage is active from the first day of stay in Spain, without waiting periods for urgent treatments.
- Medical Repatriation and RemainsUnlimited coverage for medical repatriation of seriously ill people or transfer of remains in the event of death.

Colombian EPS (Sura, Sanitas Colombia, Compensar) or local prepaid medicine policies do not have administrative validity in Spain for national visas.
The insurance must be contracted with an insurance company registered with the Spanish DGSFP (such as Sanitas España, Adeslas, DKV, Asisa or Mapfre España) with an official certificate issued specifically for immigration and visa procedures.

Key Practical Tips
What the team recommends before you file anything:
- The effective date of the health insurance must coincide exactly with the expected day of your arrival in Spain or the start date of your classes.
- Make sure that the certificate is issued by the Spanish parent company of the insurer. Having 'Sanitas Colombia' is not legally equivalent to having 'Sanitas Spain'.
